Eid Mubarak!
Happy Eid-ul-Fitr to all my Muslim friends and clients! What a wonderful time to enjoy the festivities especially after Ramadan and a month of fasting. I often wonder to myself the amount of commitment it takes to fast during the hours of daylight and not let a single bit of food or drink to pass the lips. While I have done intermittent fasting in the past, I always had the option to drink water and not feel dehydrated, so I applaud my Muslim clients who work a full day, look after their families, cook for the evening meal all while having low energy levels! On top of this they have to work extra hard to ensure the skin doesn’t feel neglected or deprived.
Middle Eastern women are celebrated the world over for their glowing skin, luscious hair and gorgeous eyes. Ancient civilizations from this part of the world have been using nature to enhance their beauty. Think argan oil, kohl, henna, rosewater, orange blossom, milk & yogurt, threading, sugar waxing they know what works. But even with all these hints and tips, after Ramadan the body and skin need some help.
So I’m going to take a look at the effects of dehydration on the skin because if there is any issue after fasting for a month, it will be, has the body had enough water that day? Living in Colorado with its dry climate we can never get enough water into the skin. So what do I advise? Post Ramadan, skin needs regular water and moisturizer.
Hyaluronic acid is now your friend! But this wonder serum comes with rules in a dry climate. Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in the skin and gives it its suppleness. When applied to skin it adds that extra moisture BUT it also does that by taking moisture from the air and pushing it into the skin. So what happens when the air is dry like it is in Colorado? Then it takes the water from the deeper layers of the skin to give it to the top layers, that results in drier, crepey skin! “Yikes” I hear you cry, “should I throw away my hyaluronic acid serum?” No. Just follow these steps when using it and you can still hydrate your skin.
- Wash as usual, pat skin dry and apply a rosewater spritz
- Apply hyaluronic acid serum
- Apply a few drops of facial oil, like rosehip or jojoba
- Then add your usual moisturizer
- Sunscreen and/or makeup
So what does this do? The oil seals the skin and stops the hyaluronic acid robbing the skin of water. It’s a win-win because many oils are nourishing and healing. If you feel like you need a bigger boost then the nourishing facials we offer can help.I can also suggest a lactic acid peel (think Cleopatra!) to add moisture to the skin!
